Issues and challanges

  • Coordination plays a vital role for smooth implementation of any plan and program. In agricultural sector of Bangladesh, inter-organizational coordination problem is obvious. Research organization (Universities and Research institutions are working to innovate new ideas and innovations. On the other hand, implementation organizations, e.g. Department of Agricultural Extension, are working for proper execution agricultural flourishment in Bangladesh. But unfortunately, coordination between these two parts are not well established. This phenomenon not only reduce the chance of new technology implementation in farmer’s field but also hinder the actual adaptation practices.
  • Another challenge is knowledge sharing gap. In common practice of Bangladesh, farmers are not directly engaged in new knowledge sharing activities e.g. workshop, training etc. This process has two backdrops. Firstly, the grower community kept in dark for new technological advances. Secondly the researchers are also losing chance of having real field scenarios which would be very helpful for adjusting the technologies.
  • We should concentrate more on bottom-up approach rather than top-down approach. Farmers and local communities are always working to adopt with climate change as a whole. They have many indigenous knowledge which could added more value to researcher’s new innovations.
  • Although crop diversification issue is already taken seriously by DAE but still we have to work a lot on this aspect. Farmers of our country still grow rice as their main crop. It gives them a feelings of security in terms of their own food security. But agricultural development requires diversification of non-rice crop as rice consumption reduces from 472g per person per day to 367g per person per day and increase of Potato and vegetable consumption increased from 43 g per person per day to 65 g per person per day and from 137 g per person per day to 167 g per person per day respectively. But the future of crop diversification largely depends on the removal of a number of constraints that currently inhibit their expansion, including comparatively less attention given to development of appropriate technology for non-rice crops and inadequacies of market infrastructure and services, which need proper attention.
  • Farm mechanization is another major area for improvement in terms of adaptation. Large production in small area needs more concentrated and timely service. Moreover, quick response is required during any emergency situation e.g. flash flood. Farm mechanization not only reduce turnover time but also increase productivity of services. But with mostly depending on traditional farming we lose more and more of our resources.
